During 2014, CBS’s space drama “Extant” starring Halle Berry had a pretty healthy run for a summer series. The series’ first season featured an impressive list of Hollywood names including Halle Berry, Goran Visnjic, Hiroyuki Sanada and many more, but in the second season things take a different turn and the executive production cut out some important characters, like the husband of the main character, played by the handsome Croatian actor Goran Visnjic. Reportedly, these cutbacks were mainly budget related, but later on, official sources revealed that the cause for this major reorganization in season 2 was due to some radical changes in the storyline, which follows Molly played by Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, in her search for her alien son who has undertaken hostile actions against humanity.
Apart from Visnjic, who played the role of Halle Berry’s husband and work friend, a few more big characters were also replaced or left out. In the first season of “Extant”, we saw Molly return from her solo space mission, and reunite with her husband John or Goran Visnjic and android son. But after her arrival, she discovers that she had somehow ended up pregnant with a space baby. At the time, her husband seemed perfectly normal and fitted into the whole story, which only raised, even more doubts about the discard of Visnjic and other important characters. Latest reports indicate that at least Camryn Manheim and Goran Visnjic who plays John will return to the series for a couple of episodes before the plot branches off into a different story.
Those who are anxious to see how those changes will fit in the second season of the “Extant” story, will have to wait a bit more. It’s not like this is the first series ever to take a twist in-between seasons, but also it isn’t usual for a show to undergo such extreme makeover, leaving out almost all of the season’s full-time regulars including the male lead, Goran Visnjic who was replaced. Out of the seven full-time regulars, only three of them made it to the second season and those were the leading actress Halle Berry who plays astronaut Molly Woods, her robo-son Ethan played by Pierce Gagnon, and the partially robotic scientist Julie Gelineau played by Grace Gummer.
