Almost a week ago, near the mountain Velebit, movie director Antun Vrdoljak made the first scene of the long-anticipated film biography of Ante Gotovina named “General”. In addition to the film, he will also be shot 8 episodes of the drama series that will air on HRT, the Croatian National Television. Hundreds of actors, more than a thousand extras, thousands of Croatian army uniform pieces, Serbian paramilitary units and Foreign Legion, gathered all together on Velebit. Apart from this mythical mountain, both series and the movie ‘General’ will also be filmed on ten more locations within Croatia. The leading role was given to the most famous Croatian actor Goran Visnjic, who has built a successful career in Hollywood. Apart from him, the movie director was also able to get a real dream team acting cast, which will play both real and fictional characters.
The “convenient biographical novel” written by Nenad Ivankovic served as the main source of inspiration for the movie script. As a national hero, Goran Visnjic has always felt a great deal of respect and admiration for Ante Gotovina. The movie director, Antun Vrdoljak, added that Gotovina didn’t want to read the script, and after he was released from prison he said that if the movie turns out to be good, they should give him a call and invite him to the movie premiere. The film starts at The Hague when he is sentenced to 24 years in prison, and begins to remember what exactly happened. After that, the film will continue with him going back to the second trial. Because it is a big and complex project, the movie scenes will be recorded all over the country.
When Goran Visnjic was asked whether he is excited to play Gotovina, the actor said that he is more than excited, even thrilled and at the same time nervous about this role. When the general was taken to The Hague, we were all frustrated and we started talking and decided that we must do something and that is how we came up with the idea of making a movie. That is how it all started. In a way, that was our own naive desire to help him somehow, or if not more, allow people to see the truth. Even though Goran Visnjic has appeared in so many big Hollywood titles, still this is the most emotional project that he has ever undertaken, which is why he feels so nervous.
